I have been a video artist since 1994 and have had a lot of bad experiences with art festivals and curators. I decided to create this blog to report all of my negative experiences with “the art world” and to give artists a space online to report their own negative experiences. I hope the discussions on this website provide a guide and a voice for artists who really believe in what they do.
Nowadays when dealing with certain curators (I am speaking only of some and not all) it can feel as if the artist is placed in a realm where they no longer count as a human being. A curator may consider you don’t even deserve a short answer to something as simple, and necessary, as requesting a point of contact. It seems you are only worthy of attention if and only if you are already a well known artist whose art is able to produce MONEY.
I do not want to make a list of all the famous artists who make art solely for money, that is not the purpose of this blog, but please allow me to say that at the moment there are a lot of well paid decorators guaranteed money by ignorant and arrogant curators. If you produce art with the sole intention of making money, what you do is not sincere and should not be categorized as “art.”
To be a sincere artist you must look at your own life, observe what surrounds you, encode your vision enriched by your real feelings, and turn your own inner vision of the world into YOUR art pieces. Only in this way will an art piece be true and sincere and able to open multiple doors to the vision of those that look upon it. If you stay true to yourself and your artwork reflects what you believe in, not what a curator may demand of you, you are already a good artist and that should not be up for debate. I think it’s time to take our space back!
